"When
I was a little girl, I was a very typical little girl, at
least for a number of years. In third grade, my family moved
from a farmette to a larger farm out in the country near
St. Augustine, Pennsylvania. My mother never wanted the
dogs and cats in the house, so they had to stay outside.
On this farm we had a variety of animals—bunnies in
cages, their feet chewed off by rats, cats who chased the
rats, chickens—both running loose and in coops, cows,
a horse, and sometimes pigs, most of whom ended up on our
dinner plates. Our black lab ran the neighborhood and we
had a chained beagle named Maggie...yet during that time,
I was more concerned with me, and certainly would not have
noticed much about the suffering of the animals or how they
died, this came on by degrees..."
This
work speaks of a soul preoccupied with itself, which doesn't
see the plight of
the chained dog or other suffering creatures. Many are still
there today.
